In response to the devastating floods that have affected over 293,000 individuals across 16 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Bauchi State, Safer World Foundation and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) with funding from The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through The Rapid Response Fund (RFF), have signed a grant agreement to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to those affected.
The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall, have resulted in widespread displacement of over 30,000 households, significant loss of lives, and injuries. The destruction of over 52,000 homes and damage to an additional 172,000 houses forced displaced persons to seek shelter in overcrowded public facilities and in host communities, compounding their vulnerability. Essential services, including water, sanitation, and healthcare, have been severely disrupted, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases, Gender Based Violence (GBV) and other hazards.
This project, supported by the new grant agreement, will focus on five of the worst-affected LGAs: Zaki, Itas/Gadau, Katagum, Giade, and Ganjuwa. These LGAsareas are home to 7,403 displaced households, comprising over 77,000 individuals, including women, children, the elderly individuals, and persons with disabilities.
The planned intervention aims to directly support 3,703 households, benefiting an estimated 18,515 individuals.
The scale of devastation in Bauchi State is unprecedented, and the needs are immense. This grant agreement with IOM, with support from USAID through the RFF marks a significant step towards providing life-saving assistance and restoring dignity to those affected by this crisis. “We are committed to a response that prioritizes the most vulnerable and fosters resilience within these communities.”
The estimated cost of damages in Bauchi State exceeds ₦7.8 billion, underscoring the critical need for immediate and comprehensive action. This intervention is informed by findings from a Rapid Needs Assessment conducted by Safer World Foundation, with support from the Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
