Project Background

Safer World Foundation’s work in Bauchi State has highlighted a crucial issue: the exclusion of young people from decision-making processes related to peace, security, local governance, and development. This exclusion is a key cause of global fragility. Evidence indicates that when young people are marginalized from development gains, they become more vulnerable to economic shocks, social instability, and conflicts.

The Impact on Young People

Young men and women aged 18 to 35 are often left out of development programs and governance activities. This exclusion limits their economic, social, and political participation. As a result, they may remain unaware of their human rights and the rights that apply to them due to their age. Additionally, high unemployment rates pose a significant barrier to youth engagement in decision-making. This situation leaves young people susceptible to political manipulation and recruitment into violent extremist groups.

Addressing Youth Exclusion

To tackle these challenges, the initiative Youth Inclusion in Democratic Conflict Resolution and Civic Education aims to empower young people in Bauchi State. The project seeks to give them a stronger voice in decisions that shape their lives. By addressing their grievances and basic needs, the initiative aims to rebuild trust with community leaders, state authorities, and security forces. This trust is vital for long-term stability, as it fosters collaboration among stakeholders in preventing and responding to conflict triggers.

Promoting Peaceful Coexistence

The project will target both push factors (such as exclusion from decision-making and lack of economic opportunities) and pull factors (including persuasive narratives and social pressure) that lead to conflict. It will promote dialogue and peaceful coexistence among youths, decision-makers, and security actors. Additionally, the initiative will build the capacities of youth leaders to address conflict and establish networks among them. This project will be implemented in three selected local government areas across Bauchi State’s three senatorial zones.
